Cytology

Cytology

Cytology is a specialized field of examination focused on analyzing single cell types commonly found in fluid specimens. Its primary application lies in the diagnosis and screening of cancer, but it also serves various other purposes such as screening for fetal abnormalities, conducting Pap smears, diagnosing infectious organisms, and facilitating other screening and diagnostic procedures.
Cells for cytological examination can be obtained through several methods, including:

  1. Scraping or brushing the tissue surface, as in the case of a Pap smear.
  2. Collection of body fluids such as urine or respiratory phlegm.
  3. Fine-needle aspirations, which involve extracting cells using a fine needle from fluid accumulations like abdominal fluid in ascites, pleural fluid from the lungs, or cerebrospinal fluid from the spinal canal.
  4. Other types of tissue biopsy.

It’s important to note that cytology differs from histology, wherein cytology primarily involves the examination of a single cell type, while histology examines entire blocks of tissue.
In the Department of Cytology, we conduct the following tests:
  1. PAP smear
  2. Fluid cytology
  3. Calprotectin
  4. CBC (Complete Blood Count)
  5. CBC-ESR (Complete Blood Count with Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate)
  6. CD4
  7. CD8
  8. C
  9. D3
  10. Coomb’s test (Direct)
  11. Coomb’s test (Indirect)
  12. Drugs of abuse 8
  13. HLA B27
  14. Pylori stool
  15. Scrub typhus antibody (IgG/IgM)
  16. Typhidot (IgG/IgM)

Our department is dedicated to providing accurate and reliable cytology testing services to aid in the diagnosis, screening, and management of various medical conditions. We strive to ensure the highest standards of quality and precision in our analyses to support optimal patient care and outcomes.
